Riitta Laanala is the Head of Business Unit of Service Center in the city of Helsinki. The Digital Service Center is providing the services needed to continue living at home whether people are elderly or recovering from illness. Ms Laanala has worked for more than 25 years in the city of Helsinki, last ten years at the forefront of development, actively collaborating with contract partners to design new technical services that support independent living at home with the Social and Health Care Department. Under her lead the Digital Service Center has gone to the forefront of health and welfare reform and is a pioneer in digital care delivery. She considers that their recent success lies in constant piloting, end user testing as well as defining common process and environment for collaboration and growth. Furthermore, ensuring the business case feasibility and recognizing scalability of innovations are seen as vital drivers throughout the whole project lifecycle from her point of view. The aim has been to create an efficient and powerful concept of virtual care service for home care services in Helsinki. Currently, virtual care in Helsinki is 85% more cost efficient than traditional physical home care with more than 24.000 virtual contacts per month.
