European HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Award Winners announced at the most influential health IT conference in the region

Helsinki University Hospital and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust are recognized for Outstanding ICT Innovation and Outstanding ICT Achievement respectively.

Helsinki, Finland, 13 June 2019 – The Healthcare Information and Management System (HIMSS) and Elsevier, the global information analytics business specializing in science and health. Together, HIMSS and Elsevier are proud to recognize organisations for outstanding achievement and innovation in the implementation and usage of health information and technology that truly improves patient care and safety, via the HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Awards.

The award winners were announced yesterday in front of a crowd of over 2,900 healthcare professionals at the HIMSS & Health 2.0 European Conference in Helsinki, Finland. HIMSS and Elsevier recently published an announcement about the six finalists of two categories: “Outstanding ICT Innovation” and “Outstanding ICT Achievement.” During this morning’s Opening Keynote, Tim Morris, Commercial Portfolio and Partnerships Director for EMEALAAP at Elsevier, announced the winners:

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, from the UK, won the “Outstanding ICT Innovation Award” for its project “Joined-up healthcare through digital technology.”

The team at Cambridge University Hospitals created a UK breakthrough linking the Trust’s EPR with a neighboring hospital's EPR (different suppliers), a technical innovation linking digitally with primary care, creating and launching the UK's first and fully integrated patient portal, providing a comprehensive and consistent view of patient's care.

Having a digital link with the neighboring hospital saw more than 2,000 records shared for more than 1,500 patients in the first eight weeks. 24 patient records have been shared to date with international hospitals directly through EPR, and more than 5,000 patients across 64 clinical specialties are now using the EPR-integrated patient portal.

Helsinki University Hospital, from Finland, won the “Outstanding ICT Achievement Award” for its project “Health Village.”

HUS Helsinki University Hospital cares for 500,000 patients annually. 25,000 professionals provide specialized healthcare for 24-member municipalities and nationally for patients with rare and severe diseases. It provides high quality, effective and customer centered care efficiently and competitively.

By developing eHealth services, the hospital aimed not only to create technical solutions but to support operational change. Through the Health Village concept, it can enable patients to actively participate in their care, improve the use of our resources and provide high quality care regardless of time and place.

The success of Health Village concept lies in various aspects: enabling clinical professionals and patients to re-design the service; providing support for operational change throughout the development program; and scalability of the system, where same platforms can be used for all patient groups.

According to a forecast, the annual impact of improved production efficiency will rise to €316 million a year. 600,000 users visit Health Village pages monthly, more than 30,000 patients and over 1,300 professionals have logged onto My Path portal, while 30,000 professionals visit HealthVillagePRO monthly.

The HIMSS-Elsevier Awards are being hosted in Europe for the third time and have previously been celebrated in the Asia Pacific region for over six years, in the Middle East region for four and in Brazil and the Latin American region for the first time, earlier this year. It reflects Elsevier’s ongoing global commitment to supporting healthcare providers to continually evolve, in order to meet the needs of a changing population and changing health care. All the shortlisted projects use robust data and insights to streamline systems and make better use of healthcare practitioner skills to improve patient management  and clinical outcomes.

The winners for both categories also presented their project in depth at the HIMSS-Elsevier Networking and Dinner event on 12 June at the HIMSS & Health 2.0 European Conference in Helsinki, Finland.
